Hamatonbetsu’s first snow came Tuesday morning. It lasted a few hours, but didn’t stick and was gone after two sunshine filled days. I was not too intimidated.
Unfortunately, that was just a tease. Yuki, Japanese for snow and the Kanji in the title, has been coming down pretty much all day today and hasn’t let up tonight. I cleaned my car off for the drive over, but after a two hour judo practice, my front door lock was frozen shut and my car was covered in two and a half inches of snow.
Driving home under 25 miles an hour I did a violent skid when I tried to stop at a stop sign. Needless to say yuki is not fu*&ing around.
Nobody else seems to be shoveling right now, so I’ll ignore my father’s mantra of hourly driveway clearing, to “get ahead of the snow.” That hasn’t worked out too well for me in the past, we shall see how it goes tomorrow.

Theresa, I appreciate the advice, I too am lazy. Also being familiar with NY state winters, how do they compare to Hamaton?
If it helps at all, I came from snowy Buffalo, and I only shoveled the morning of going to work. Part of my strategy was parking as near the end of the driveway as possible, and then just clearing the car tracks and enough snow to clear the bottom of the car. ^^ I was lazy!

Charlie: Glad you didn’t get hurt driving home. As usual I loved your blog. Thanks for sharing the picture and your reflections on the first snow. Hope your Dad reads this blog. Love ya!
